About the Author

Inspired by her birthplace of Australia, CJ Dainton writes stories of friendship and heartbreak against the backdrop of a spectacular and intimidating land. They are her love story to a country of rich landscapes in its geography, history, and people.

  • "There is the truth and the account of the truth. When one cannot make them agree, one must choose. And in my experience, the account is almost always more entertaining."

    - Girlie

Betrayed by a friend.

Separated from my husband.

Exiled.

I was a nobody, but I didn’t belong in Newgate Prison. After a man died at my hand, I was transported to Australia. But I didn’t leave everything behind…

Confined at sea, armed with only a new name and a new friend, the visions of the dead I’ve had since childhood continue. And despite constant misfortune, I must survive so I can find out what went wrong in London and find my husband.

When we arrive in New South Wales, my shipmates and I are scattered across the fledgling colony, and I am alone again. But this time, I have courage to guide me.

I must use what scraps of independence I have to build a new life for myself in a colony that needs me, but doesn’t want me.

With death in my wake and the dead at my heels, can I find a place to belong while searching for my friends and the truth of my betrayal?

They called me Girlie.

This is my story.
